Mr. Alexander attended Rutherford College. At the time of his death, he was an elder in the Bethel Presbyterian Church near Cornelius. For many years, he was a Sunday School Superintendent. He served 16 years on the Mecklenburg County Board of Education and was elected for 2 terms to the N.C. House of Representatives. At one time he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mecklenburg County Sanitorium and a Trustee for North Carolina A&T College. At the time of his death, he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Farmers Co. He also served on the Board of Directors of A.S.C. As a prominent farmer of the North Mecklenburg Community, he took an active part in the extension of Electrical and Telephone Services and in promoting improved roads into rural areas.

Mr. Alexander and his wife Daisy had four sons: Pressley, James, Eugene and Jay W. (Jr.). They had two daughters: Laura (J. D. Morris) and Lois (James M. Bell).
