James Arthur Burton, 87, formerly of Petersburg passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh.

He was born on July 28, 1926 in Petersburg to Virgil Victor and Agnes (Gilliland) Burton. He had lived in Canton, IL since 1962 coming from Astoria, IL. He served in the United States Navy Seabees during WWII and was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW. He retired from Amax Coal Sunspot Mine of Astoria, IL in 1988 and belonged to the U.M.W.A. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Canton and he was also an avid reader.

He is survived by his wife Reba Lee (Woods) Burton of Canton, IL; 2 daughters Cheryl Kay (Dale) Parr of Lewistown, IL. and Diana Lynn (Charles) Waggoner of Portales, NM; 6 grandchildren Michael Keith Parr, Kristi Lynn Barclay, Bethany Kay Jarrell, Melissa Je'nee Brown, Jason Russell Waggoner, and Zachary Charles Waggoner; 8 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents Virgil and Agnes Burton; a son James Keith Burton in 1975 and a sister Betty Nixon.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. CDT on Monday, August 5, 2013 at Corn-Colvin Funeral Home in Oakland City, officiated by James Michael Woods. Burial will be at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Petersburg. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. CDT on Sunday and from 9 until service time on Monday at Corn-Colvin Funeral Home. Military graveside services by Petersburg V.F.W. and American Legion.
