OBITUARY: Boonville, Indiana Standard (Re-printed from the Evansville Courier) - February 11, 1916:
Susannah Hopkins, the last surviving grandchild of Ratliffe Boone, one of the first governors of Indiana and for whom Boonville was named, passed away Sunday morning shortly after 7 o'clock at her home, 314 Adams Avenue. Although nearing her eighty-eighth year, she enjoyed good health until several weeks ago, when she began ailing. She appeared, however, to be on the road to recovery when the final summons came and her sudden death proved a great shock to her relatives and friends. Mrs. Hopkins was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Alexander, residing in Warrick county near Boonville. Her mother was a daughter of Ratliffe Boon, one of the early settlers of Warrick county. Although Mrs. Hopkins was only a child when her grandfather died, her memory of him and his private and public life as told to her by her mother remained fresh with her. To her children she often related the story of his election as the first Representative of Warrick county and of his sixteen years of service in congress, also his election twice as lieutenant governor of Indiana and his then filling the unexpired term of governor, due to the election of Gov. William Hendricks to the U.S. senate. Mrs. Hopkins was born and reared near Boonville and later wooed there by Alfred Hopkins. After their marriage they settled near Chandler, Ind. Upon the death of her husband, Mrs. Hopkins came to Evansville and was a resident of this city for the past thirty-two years. She is survived by two sons, Clarence and Charles, and by four daughters, Estella, Ella, Minerva and Mrs. Wilford Shrode, also two grandchildren, Clarence Shriver of Indianapolis and Helen Hopkins of this city. Funeral services will be held at the home on Adams avenue tomorrow morning at 9:30 and will be conducted by Rev. H.A. Hymes of Grace Presbyterian church. The body will be taken for burial to Center cemetery in Warrick county on the 11 o'clock Boonville traction.
