Dicey's Brother: George Russell first served as a private in Captain Francis Jone's Co. of Tenn. Mil. from 24 Sep 1813 to 1 Dec 1813, then transferred to Capt. Wm. Russell's Spy Co., Col. Blue's Reg. Tenn. Vol. Mil. and served from 1 Dec 1813 to 4 Apr 1814. Later in 1814 he served again as a private in Capt. George Michie's Company, Maj. William Russell's Separate Battalion of Tenn. Mtd. Gunman. The National Archives reports only the latter service, from 28 Sept 1814 to 27 Mar 1815. George Russell was a son of Maj. William Russell under whom he served.

When Major Gibson asked for two of the best riflemen to scout with him into the Creek Indian Nation in 1813, Davy Crockett was selected and then Davy asked for George Russell for his mate. Davy said, "I choose a young man by the name of George Russell, a son of old Major Russell of Tennessee, for I know'd George Russell".
