SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection contains letters written by Hardwick to his family in Martinsville, Morgan County, while serving with
the 33rd Indiana Regiment, 1861–65. Most of the letters were written to his brother, Alexander, in Brooklyn, Morgan
County, and his parents in Centerton, Morgan County. Letters were written while with the 33rd Regiment in
Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas and describe military operations and battles, camp life, and include
comments and questions about people and conditions at home.
Of particular note is his detailed description of the regiment's actions with Sherman's march through Georgia, May–
December 1864. Also contained in the papers are Hardwick's handwritten description and a typescript of his capture
at the Battle of Thompsons Station and his subsequent imprisonment at Libby Prison, Virginia, March–May 1863. In
it he details the horrors of a Confederate hospital at Columbia, Tennessee, and the indignities that existed at Libby
Prison.
The remainder of Hardwick's papers deal with his role as subscription manager for John McBride's regimental history
of the 33rd, published in 1900. In addition to a signed copy of the history, there are letters from the surviving veterans,
order forms, and subscription records, 1896–1902.
