ATLANTIAN SLAIN IN REVOLVER DUEL; ATTACKER KILLED

Double Shooting Takes Place In Front Of North Avenue Apartment

Mr. Charles Thompson, secretary of the Nehi Bottling Company, was shot to death Saturday night in a pistol duel with Calvin Mahone, a Negro, in which the latter was also fatally injured. The shooting occurred in front of an apartment house at 310 North Avenue N.E. Mr. Thompson, who resides at 629 North Highland N.E. was said to have threatened the Negro with arrest for having stolen accessories from his automobile when Mahone drew a revolver and began firing. Mr. Thompson returned the fire. When police arrived, they found Mr. Thompson and the Negro dead near the automobile.
The bottle company executive was shot through the heart, abdomen, and arm. Mahone had bullet wounds in the abdomen and head. J. F. Chapman, 82 North Broad Street, told police he was attracted to the scene by an argument in progress between Mr. Thompson and the Negro. On investigation, Chapman said, he found the Negro seated in Mr. Thompson’s car and search revealed Mahone had pocketed an ashtray used as an accessory in the machine. Chapman told police he ran when the shooting started.
Mr. Thompson was 43 years old.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. D.E. Thompson of Swainsboro, Ga.; three sisters, Mrs. Frank E. Morgan and Mrs. Wallace Clark both of Augusta, Ga.; and Mrs. George Johnson and a brother, Claude S. Thompson of Ambridge, Pa.
