Rev. Alexander Eckert, son of George and Sophia Eckert, was born August 19, 1888 in Barber county and passed away on Saturday, November 21 in the Holton hospital at the age of 93 years. He graduated from the Aetna high school in 1906 the year in which James Whitcomb Riley delivered the commencement address. He attended Kansas State College, Kansas Wesleyan Business College of Salina, Baker University, and studied for the ministry at the Midland College Academy in Fremont, Nebraska. In 1917 he entered the Army Infantry and served as a front line sergeant until he was discharged in 1919 as a result of injuries. He was united in marriage in June 1920 to Arstein L. Jaquish. To this marriage three children were born: two sons, James and Charles and a daughter, Ruth. He was preceded in death by his son, Charles A. who was killed in action in 1944 during World War II, and his wife who died in 1974. Alex began preaching in Lancaster and was admitted into the Kansas Methodist conference in March 1920, at which time he was assigned to the Onaga church. He later attended Iliff School of Theology in Denver, returning to the Kansas conference in 1924 and was assigned to Winchester Methodist Episcopal church. In the years following 1926 he served churches in Zion, Beattie, Randolph, Seneca and the Pottawatomie Mission. In addition to his membership in the Kansas East Conference, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 41 AF&AM. Survivors include a son, James E. Eckert of Tulsa, Oklahoma; a daughter, Mrs. Ruth L. Riggin of Overland Park, and one sister, Mrs. Freda Thilstedt of Alva, Oklahoma; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist church of Holton at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 24, with the Rev. Roy West and the Rev. Jud Jones officiating. Music was furnished by Clyde and Claude Rieschick who sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden" accompanied by Mrs Dolores Wright. Pallbearers were Clarence Cashman, Charles Heckerson, Milton Schober, Floyd Amon, Marvin Castle and Carl Dell. Honorary pall bearers were Merel Cochren, Glen Rogers, John Lytle, John Cherry, Ollie Woodman, George Stephens and George Dunlap. The flower ladies were Mrs. Clarence Cashman, Mrs. Milton Schober and Mrs. Marvin Castle. The Holton Masonic Lodge AF&AM No. 42 had Masonic graveside services with John Lytle giving the oration.
