MALINDA ELIZABETH HANKINS married LEROY HAMPTON SMITH about 1850 in Fayette Co., Alabama.
MALINDA and LEROY SMITH were baptized at the BLOOMING GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH in Fayette County, Alabama in August 1861.
MALINDA's husband, LEROY HAMPTON SMITH, enlisted in the Confederate Army and died at the Camp Morton Prisoner of War Camp near Indianapolis, Indiana, on February 9, 1865. She was widowed at the young age of 33 years, with six young children to raise.
She and her six children, JOHN W, SARAH E, ANDREW S, ISHAM J, LUELLA, and HAMPTON, are found on the 1870 Lawrence, Sanford (now Lamar) County Census - she is age 38 years, the value of her real estate is $500, and the value of her personal property is $500.
MALINDA lived almost 40 years after the death of her husband - we cannot imagine the hardships and struggles she endured while raising her children without the support of her husband.
