Outlaw. Born one of fifteen children of Lewis and Adeline Dalton including brothers Bob, William and Grattan Dalton. Emmett, Bob and Grat served briefly as lawmen, but saw more profit as rustlers. The Dalton gang robbed banks and trains throughout Oklahoma. Bob Dalton was considered the leader; other members included Bill Doolin, George Newcomb, Charlie Bryant, Bill Powers, Charlie Pierce, Dick Broadwell, William McElhanie. After the gang robbed a train at Pryor Creek in 1892, a bounty of $5,000 a head was placed on the Daltons. On October 5, 1892, the gang decided to rob two banks in the town of Coffeyville. Emmett and Bob went into the First National Bank while Grat Dalton, Bill Powers and Dick Broadwell moved on the Condon Bank. The men were spotted and an alert quickly spread through the town. The men of Coffeyville armed themselves and in the shoot-out that followed, four members of the gang, Bob Dalton, Grat Dalton, Bill Powers and Dick Broadwell and four townsmen Lucius Baldwin, George Cubine, Charles Connelly and Charles Brown were killed. Emmett Dalton survived the raid despite receiving 23 gunshot wounds. After his capture he went on trial and was found guilty of murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in the penitentiary at Lansing, Kansas. He was released after fourteen years, however, and moved to California where he became a real estate agent and author. In 1931 he published ‘When the Dalton's Rode’. Dalton died peacefully in Los Angeles in 1937.
