LA VERKlN, Washington County—A North Las Vegas man was wounded fatally Monday while hunting rabbits near here. Melvin Lynbert Gifford, 31, 1200 Stanley St., North Las Vegas, died en route to the Dixie Pioneer Memorial Hospital, St. George, after a .22 caliber rifle he was carrying accidentally discharged.

MR. GIFFORD had left La Verkin early Monday morning with two companions, DeVar Gubler and DeLoy Whittwer, both of La Verkin, to hunt rabbits in the Gould's Wash area. The two friends of the victim told Washington County Sheriff Roy R. Renouf they heard the report of a rifle about 8 a.m. and Mr. Gilford cried out, "I'm shot."

THEY SAID he began running toward the car. The hunters ran toward the wounded man at the same time and reached him in time to help him into the automobile. En route to the hospital the victim told them he had dropped a clip from his rifle. When he reached to retrive it, the rifle butt had struck a rock, causing it to discharge.

Mr. GIFFORD died before reaching the hospital. Attendants said the bullet had lodged in his right lung.

Mr. Gifford had operated a trucking firm in La Verkin until 1948. At the time of his death he was co-owner of the Gifford Electrical, Inc., Las Vegas. No inquest is planned into the death.

MR. GIFFORD was born July 5, 1929, in La Verkin, Washington County, to Cyrus and Ina Bundy Gifford. He married Ramona Gubler Feb. 6, 1948, in the St. George Temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

HE IS survivied by his widow, a son, Melvin Lyndon and six daughters, Lynde Mona, Sherrie, Katheryn, Connie and Thora Lynn, all of North Las Vegas; his parents, on an LDS mission, Sanders, Arizona, and brothers and sisters: Nathan Bernard. U.S. Navy, Fallon, Nevada; Sheldon, Lamond, Omar, Mrs. William (Angie) Gallagher. Mrs. Rowland (La Rulla) Reber, Mrs. Russel (Avanelle) Wood, all of Las Vegas, and Mrs. Willard (Beulah) Pectol, Salt Lake City.
