She walked in beauty with quiet dignity, and each day was a joyful experience because she shared herself. And now, after ninety years, our beloved, Katie Jones Stokes, quietly slept into eternal rest. June 2, 1 987 wi1l always be remembered as the day she looked forward to, and prepared for from early childhood. She was born in Roxboro, NC to the late Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Jones. She moved to South Boston with her family at a very age, and was educated in its public schools. She accepted Christ as her lifelong choice, and joined Ebenezer CME church where she remained a faithful member until death. She loved Ebenezer and worked with the missionaries and the Stewardess Board until her illness. She served as secretary and treasurer and used her musical talents to sing in the senior choir. She was joined in holy wedlock to Bouldin Stokes. This union was blessed with four children. A son, Johnny, preceded her in death. Loved by the community, she was a guiding light and a shining example. The quiet beauty of her life, the strength of her beliefs and that great love for family and friends shall always linger in the memories of her devoted and loving children: James of Baltimore, MD, Alice Garland of South Boston, and Eva Cunningham of Newark, NJ; her four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; her sister, Mrs. Roan Gunn of East Orange, NJ, one daughter-in-law, Roxie Stokes, two sons-in-law, Joseph Garland and Lonnie Cunningham; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
