Bom in Carthage, he was the son of the late Gilliam, and Grace Kennedy Fry. He was a lifelong Carthage resident, a 1935 graduate of Carthage High School and 1937 graduate of Gupton Jones Embalming School in Nashville, Tenn. He joined his father as a funeral director immediately following graduation, operating R.G. Fry & Son Funeral Home. He retired from the funeral business after 20 years in 1957. Following this he assisted in managing the former Carthage Furniture Co. for 11 years. In 1968, he was appointed as a Moore County magistrate. After attending the Institute of Government in Chapel Hill, he served as chief magistrate of Moore County's first "civil" court, until his retirement in 1981. He was a former Carthage Town Board commissioner, deacon at the First Baptist Church, past president of the Rotary Club of Carthage and served as a Carthage volunteer fireman for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rose Underwood Fry; three sons, R.G. "Bob" Fry III of Newport News, Alvin "Buck" U. Fry of Pinehurst and Mark S. Fry of Carthage; two sisters, Mrs. Masal Barbour of Bristol, Tenn., and Mrs. Louise F. Carter of Carthage; and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
