Melvin Leon Love, Sr., was born August 8, 1925 in LaGrange, GA. He was the son of Maude Walker and Joseph Charnic Love. The family moved to Newell, NC, when Melvin was three years old. He attended Newell High School. He entered the US Army and fought in the European Campaign. He was wounded during the Battle of Saint Lo in France and was later awarded a Purple Heart and Gold Star. He returned home and worked with Colonial Stores and Big Star Foods. He married Frances Carolyn Murphy on June 11, 1961 in Penderlea, NC. The family lived in Charlotte, NC, and included three children: Elizabeth Mae, Melvin Leon, Jr., and Melody Sue. Melvin passed away at home on January 5, 2004.
