Mr. Coates was a World War II Army veteran who served in North Africa and Italy. He was a lifelong resident of Westmoreland County and worked in the seafood and lumber industries.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Garnett Kent Coates; two sons, James L. Coates and his wife, Linda, and Robert W. Coates and his wife, Laura; one sister, Jean C. Jones; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 19, at St. Peter's Cemetery in Oak Grove.
