James Alfred Lindsey was born 28 Apr 1793 near the Haw River, east of Raleigh, NC. His parents were Delilah (Hodgson) Brewer and James Lindsey -- a Revolutionary War veteran. He and Jane (aka Jean) Scott were married 2 Feb 1814 in Christian County, KY. They moved to Tazewell County in April 1834. James Alfred was a pioneering preacher in the Christian Church / Disciples of Christ denomination and founded the Christian Church in nearby Mackinaw, as well as several others in the area.

Removed to Illinois in April 1834. Died July 2, 1872, aged 79 years, 2 months, 4 days. He ceased to preach Christ when he ceased to breathe.
