William R. "Gummy" Faulkner Of Greenwood, formerly of North Bowers Beach and Wilmington, died Monday, October 4, 1999 in the Country Rest Home in Greenwood. He was 90.

Mr. Faulkner was born in Wilmington on August 5, 1909 to the late Herman and Annie S. Faulkner. He had graduated from Wilmington High School where he had played 2 years of scholastic football. While still attending Wilmington High, he had also played semi-pro football for Pen-Del in Kennett Square, PA as Delaware had a Blue Law in which no football games were allowed on Sundays. The Pen-Del team went undefeated for 5 years. He then played with the Penns Grove, NJ Red Devils and had also played for Allied Kid Cubs, St. Mary's, and the Southside Terrapins. "During his football career, Gummy was considered the best running back Delaware ever produced." He had also starred and excelled in baseball and later in bowling on a local bowling team. On November 14, 1992, he was inducted into the Southside Athletic Association's Sports Hall of Fame.

He and his wife, Edna, owned and operated Faulkner's Pier in North Bowers Beach for over 50 years before retiring in 1975 and turning the business over to his 2 daughters, Maureen Irons and Phyllis Kay Moore..

Mr. Faulkner was a great outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed playing golf and riding a bike.

He had been a member of the Hillcrest-Bellefonte United Methodist Church in Wilmington and the Granite-Corinthian Lodge 34 A.F. & A.M.

Mr. Faulkner was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Edna D. Faulkner on August 23, 1997.

He is survived by 2 daughters, Phyllis F. Moore and her husband William of Dover, and Maureen F. Irons of Milford; 4 grandchildren, Lauren M. Smith of Hockessin, Gregg Moore of Dover, Stacey Bowen of Milford and Wayne M. Irons, Jr. of Frederica; and 6 great grandchildren.

Private services were held in TORBERT FUNERAL CHAPEL in Dover. Interment was held in Silverbrook Cemetery in Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Hillcrest-Bellefonte U.M. Church, 400 Hillcrest Ave., Wilmington, DE 19809.
