Amanda J. Black Dead

Missouri Pioneer Amanda J. Black, 84, died at her home near Dillon on Apr 26, 1897. She was born Nov 27, 1812 in Augusta Co., VA. The oldest child, she moved with her parents, Wm and Rebekah McCutchan, to MO at an early age. "The journey at that early day was tedious and not unaccompanied by danger". At age 15, she married Samuel Black (of Augusta Co., VA), who sought a home in the wilderness west of the MS. They lived long in St. Louis Co., in St. Louis, and since 1866, in Dillon. Mr. Black, 88, died there Jun 23, 1891. Of their 13 children, 9 survive. Her son is Chas. R. Black, Editor of the Clayton "Argus".

Her father died in 1852 and her mother at age 93, in 1883. Her surviving siblings are Mrs. E. S. Barron, Webster Groves; Mrs. Mary Dorrah, Celina, OH; Mrs. Martha McKnight, Clayton; W. Y. McCutchan, Houston, TX; Three sisters and a brother have died. The Presbyterian funeral was Wed. to the Rolla Cemetery.
