"Wm. M. Amer Dies; Veteran Merchant Hardware Store Owner Had Been ill For Year; Active In Business And Church; William M. Amer, prominent Lititz merchant and one of the best known men in town, died yesterday morning at 4:40' at his home, 118 S. Broad Street. Death came from complications following an illness of a year. Mr. Amer was 76 yeans, old. After years, of constant attendance at his hardware store at 11 South Broad Street, Mr. Amer was stricken ill on November 17 of last year and, except for a short time, has been confined to his home ever since. During the past month he gradually became worse and had been seriously ill the last few days.
From early manhood Mr. Amer was prominent in the civic and business life of this community. He was interested in many enterprises, probably chief of which were the cigar box factory he operated for about 20 years and the hardware store of which he was proprietor for the past 22 or 23 years. He was one of the founders of the Lititz, Chocolate Company and' an organizer of the old Lititz Electric Company. For many years he was a leaf tobacco packer. Be was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church, being a charter member of St. Paul's Congregation here. For many years he maintained a perfect attendance record at both Sunday School and church and was active in various phases of church work. Fraternally, Mr. Amer was a (Continued on Page 4) member of the Manheim Masonic Lodge, the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection; (Chapter 13, Royal Arch Masons; the Harrisburg Consistory and. Zembo Temple, all Masonic organizations and of the Lititz Lodge of Odd Fellows. Surviving are his wife, Lizzie L. Amer, who, with Mr. Amer, celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary this year, a daughter, Emma B., at home; and two sisters, Louisa and Kate, of West Orange Street. Private funeral services, will be held at the home at 1:30 Saturday afternoon and at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at 2. The Rev. J. Harold Mumper, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in Machpelah Cemetery. Friends may call at the home to-morrow evening from 7 to 9. R. M. Spacht is. the funeral director."
