Allegedly, she chose her name from her Cherokee name, "Ini" and her grandfather's anglicized name, Joseph; her Cherokee surname was Bat or Batt. Josephine's parents were full-blood Cherokee. She is on the Dawes rolls and her children have Certifictes of Degree of Indian Blood; a number of them were allotted land, which some descendents still own, etc. She died in 1955 in Fairland, OK and was buried in Fairland Cemetery. Her parents' names were:

1. Ezra Edward New: Born March 7, 1896 in Ollogah (Chelsea) in Indian Territory; Married February 1915 in Neosha and died July 28, 1980 in Oklahoma City; he is buried in Memorial Garden Cemetery, Oklahoma City, OK.
2. Isaac New: Born April 1, 1897 in Chelsea, Indian Territory; Died 1913. Notes written in the margin of the document state: "Issac got sick at Aunt Martha's (granddad New's half sister) and went to Osborn's (half brother) where he died. There to help Martha." Another relative asserts, however, that he died during the influenza epidemic of 1918, but it is unclear exactly the year he died as there are no dates on the gravestones. She also stated that his parents had to go to Missouri on the train to retreive his body; they brought him back home and had him buried in Fairland.

5. William Denny (W. D.) New: Born May 25, 1904 on a farm near Bushyhead and Chelsea. Married Mildred Ruth Trammel in 1924; Divorced and second marriage to Edith Jungclass in 1940. He died in Desert Hot Springs, CA in 1985 and is buried there.
6. Josephine Olive New: Born April 1904 at a farm near Welah (7 miles) and Commerce (7 miles). She died in 1907.
7. Cora Lena New: Born December 15, 1907 in Fairland, OK. She died in 1915.
8. Floyd Ray New: Born May 24, 1911 in Fairland, OK. He died in Fort Smith, AR in 1994.
9. Claude Leonard New: Born December 15, 1912 in Fairland, OK.
10. Lloyd Henry "Kiva" New: Born February 18, 1916 in Fairland. OK. He lived and worked as a notable Native American artist in Santa Fe, NM, where he died in 2002.
