Silas DeWitt was the son of Barnet & Harriett "Hughes" DeWitt, he married Ella Esther Riegel, daughter of John L. & Catharine Riegel on January 6, 1881 at St. John's United Church of Christ in Riegelsville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. They had one son, John Riegel DeWitt, who graduated from Princeton University and was captain of the football team there. In 1868 Silas graduated from Lafayette College and in 1870 he opened a law office in Phillipsburg. He also served an attorney for the Phillipsburg Board of Education while practicing law in Phillipsburg. In 1871 he entered the Lycoming County Bar and in 1873 he was admitted to the bar of New Jersey. Silas served in the New Jersey Legislature, being elected to that office in 1877 and from 1883 to 1888 he held the office of Law Judge of Warren County. In 1892 he was appointed to adjust Indian claims. At the time of his death, he was the assistant to the United States Attorney as adjuster of Spanish claims which he had served for the last two years of his life.

He died of typhoid pneumonia in Easton, Pennsylvania while at the home of his brother, George G. DeWitt(my 2X great grandfather). According to his obituary in the Easton Express, he was well known in the area. Silas DeWitt was considered a man of high learning and respected by everyone who knew him.

He had memberships in Delaware Lodge No. 52, F. and A.M. and Eagle Chapter No. 30, R.A.M. of Phillipsburg.

The burial plot at Riegelsville has four long gravestones for Silas, his wife Ella, their son, John & John's wife, Helen.
