Obituary:

Bogart - Iris Anne McElroy Thomas Payne, our beloved mother, was born April 29, 1932, in Oconee County and died peacefully in the loving arms of Christ on Friday, April 3, 2009.
She was the daughter of the late Albert and Sarah Osborne McElroy. Iris was preceded in death by her first husband, Lagrant Thomas, of forty-one years. She was a member of Bethabara Baptist Church and was an avid gardener.
Survivors include her husband of seventeen years, Charles Payne; daughter, Elaine Thomas Whitehead-Whitmire and her husband, Chuck Whitmire, of Watkinsville; son, Rick Thomas and his wife, Gina Thomas, of Elberton; grandchildren, Chris Whitehead and his wife, Angela Whitehead, of Bogart, Michael Thomas of Athens, Amy and Brian Butler of Milledgeville, Jillian Fain of Townville, S.C., Lee Fain and his wife, Berkley, of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, C. J. Whitehead, Klay Whitehead and Grant Butler; sisters, Emily Watson of Loganville, Linda Malcom of Athens, Nina Moon of Crawford; and brothers, James McElroy of Loganville, Billy McElroy of Oklahoma City, Okla.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 6, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Bethabara Baptist Church with Rev. Warren Moorehead and Rev. Ronnie Watson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Chris Whitehead, Lee Fain, Michael Thomas, C.J. Whitehead, Brian Butler and Chuck Whitmire.
Lord & Stephens, WEST, had charge of arrangements.
