The tombstone of John W. Nelson states his birth year as 1847 and his death certificate state his birth year as 1845. They are both wrong. I'm not sure how his age came to be so exaggerated, but the earliest census records indicate he was born much later. The 1880 census, for example, indicates he was born about 1859. He is definitely not found in his father's household in the 1850 census. His parents were married in 1851 in Meigs County, Tennessee. John W. Nelson married Elizabeth Mullins, 6 Oct 1877, in Meigs County, Tennessee.
