Verta Jo Florence (Watkins) was born on 4 Jan 1915 to Joseph Gilbert "Joe" Watkins and Amanda Easter "Mandy" (Medlock) Watkins.
She had the following siblings from this union:

Pauline Ora Watkins,

Verta Jo Florence (Watkins) and Homer Orlan Gibson, son of Burse N. Gibson and Annie May (Hancock) Gibson, married on 9 Mar 1930 in Craighead Co., Arkansas.

At the time of her death, Verta had three granddaughters, Jennifer Donahue, Saria Tate and Stacy Tate; two grandsons, Todd Donahue and Trent Donahue; five great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons.

She was preceeded in death by her husband, Homer.
They had been married for 54 years.
They lived a number of years in Pontiac, Michigan where she worked as a supervisor for General Motors.
She won numerous outstanding player awards for women's professional basketball.
When they returned to Arkansas, Verta attended Arkansas State University. She became a nurse and worked at St. Bernard's Hospital in the recovery room for 15 years.
She attended worship at Downtown Church of Christ.

Visitation will be held at Roller-Farmer's Funeral Home in Jonesboro, Arkansas on 9 Apr 2009 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with gravesite services following in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Kenneth Gossett, former minister at Downtown Church of Christ, will officiate.

Songs will be provided by her great-granddaughter, Katelyn Jackson.
