Avanell A. Wallace of Effingham died at 6:40 a.m. Saturday, April 4, 2009, at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, Effingham.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hall Funeral Chapel, Effingham, with burial in Oakridge Cemetery, Effingham. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Avanell was born Oct. 13, 1913, in Dieterich, the daughter of William Henry and Minnie Christina (Coleman) Wands. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Effingham, and the church's Dorcas Circle, a long-time member of St. Anthony's Hospital Women's Auxiliary, where she volunteered many hours and also was a dedicated member of Effingham's Republican Women's Club.

Avanell and her husband, W.T. "Sonny," were the owners of one of the first motels in Effingham, The Wallace Motor Court, which included one of the first indoor swimming pools in the state of Illinois. Later, they were owner/operators of Paradise Inn in Effingham until 1973. Once retired, Avanell and Sonny traveled the world many times and enjoyed nearly 65 years together until his death in 1999. She was well-known for her quick wit and sense of humor, as well as her homemade cooking. Avanell was well loved by her family and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her sons, Richard (Barb Beatty) Wallace of Naples, Fla., and Elvan (Carol Gregory) Wallace of Effingham; grandchildren, Sean (Michelle) Wallace of Effingham, Rachel Wallace of Effingham, Ivy (Dan) Bartlett of Tampa, Fla., Jessica (Shane) Smith of Idaho Springs, Colo.; great-grandchildren, Danny and Xander Barlett of Tampa, Fla., and Logan and Landon Wallace of Effingham.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W.T. "Sonny;" sister, Edith Endebrock; brother, Arthur Wands; and grandson, Scott Wallace.
