Clifford Abbott graduated from Marcellus High School in 1913. He taught rural school in Wolcott, NY 1913-1914 and rural school in Stratford, NY 1914-1915 and graduated from Cortland State Normal School in 1917.



His notes stated: "inducted at Syracuse, NY May 25, 1918. Sent with contingent leaving Syracuse on same date to Camp Dix, N. Jersey. Left Camp Dix for A.E.F. Aug. 1918. Landed at Liverpool, Eng. via Manchester Ship Canal to Manchester on Sept. 1918. The following day we went by train to South Hampton, England and went to Calais, France via the English Channel. Then by train to a Camp located at Beautrian(?) near Bordeaux. We were located in several camps during the fall and winter, returning to Camp Dix in Mar. 1919 on City of Calcutta and received discharge Mar. 15, 1919. A private in Co. F. 348 Inf. A.E.F. (87th Division). Capt. Harris in command".

Living at Sennett, N.Y. 2 yrs., one year on leave because of illness. Taught science & math. at Elbridge Central School, Sep. '44 to Apr. 13, 1945. Retired on partial disability pension, moved to Weedsport 1945 and to Case June 1946."



He compiled a genealogy of the Abbott family in 1915 and continued to update it through the years.



Post Standard, Syracuse, N.Y., Saturday, August 8, 1953:

"Abbott, Retired Teacher, Dead

Clifford A. Abbott, a life resident of the Town of Otisco died yesterday in Crouse-Irving Hospital after a brief illness.

Mr. Abbott, who taught in Cato and Elbridge schools 29 years, had retired recently. He was a member of the New York State Teachers Association. A Veteran of World War I, Mr. Abbott served with the 348th Infantry Regiment of the 87th Division, 11 months overseas. He was a member of the Otisco Presbyterian Church and clerk of the sessions of that church.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Xenia Hawkins Abbott; a son, PFC. Arthur Abbott of Fort Bragg and four brothers, Frank, Ethelbert, Leon and Howard Abbott.

Services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Otisco Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in East Otto Cemetery. The Rev. Albert Francis will officiate. Bearers will be Scott Kingsley, Donald Wing, Clarence Eibert, Roy Kamm, Marshall Hudson and Donald Kenyon. Friends may call tomorrow and Monday at the home in Case Rd., Otisco."
