Record of the 4th Iowa Infantry
The 4th Iowa Volunteer Infantry participated in the battles of Pea Ridge,Ark, Chickasaw Bayou,MS Siege of Jackson,MS, Lookout Mt,TN, Siege of Vicksburg, Corinth, Iuka, Cherokee Station,AL, Ringgold, Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. The 4th Iowa was in almost every battle and skirmish in that campaign. The regiment's numbers were reduced to only 200 from enlisted number of 1,184 following their gallant charge securing the famous DeGress Battery of 20 pounder Parrott Cannon at Atlanta. After Sherman secured Atlanta they joined Sherman's March to the Sea, the Siege of Savannah, the Carolina's Campaign and triumphal Grand Review in Washington DC. The New York Tribune spoke of the 4th and its brigade as "one of the bravest, truest, and most tenacious fighting brigades in the service".
