Herald Journal, The (Logan, UT) - September 3, 2006

Deceased Name: George Wells Jackson Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend George Wells Jackson, age 94, passed from this life on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006 from causes incident to age. Members of his family lovingly surrounded him for several days before his passing.

Wells is survived by his lovely wife of seventy two years, Josephine Peterson (Jodie) Jackson and two children Janean (Charles) Bauman of Bountiful, and Dennis Wells (Karen) Jackson of Lewiston. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and thirty two great grandchildren, with two additional expected soon and a sister Nedra Jackson Spackman of Richmond.

Wells was born in Lewiston on March 2, 1912 the son of Marriner Wells and Julia Leavitt Jackson. He grew up in Lewiston where he attended school. At a young age he learned the virtue of hard work through practical experience and passed this virtue on to his children and grandchildren.

Wells and Jodie were married on December 20, 1933 in the Logan LDS Temple and have lived in Lewiston all of their married lives, except for a six year period in Cornish managing a farm operation. Following this time they returned to Lewiston where they purchased land and begin fulfilling a life-long dream of operating their own farm. He was an excellent farmer and took pride in caring for the animals and improving the ground. He also found great satisfaction in building wonderful memories for his posterity in this effort.

Much of the farm work was done using his teams of Percheron draft horses.

He has an inborn love for horses and was an excellent horseman with both saddle and draft horses. In later years this lead to his hobby of training and conditioning his team for competition in pulling matches all over the Western United States. He became known country wide for his World Class Championship draft horse pulling team of "Cap and Chief" and for his excellent horsemanship. As much as he loved his favorite team his first love was his family. He was frequently the favorite "show and tell" for his grandchildren.

He was a life long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was an example of its teachings. At the time of his death he was a High Priest in the Lewiston First Ward. He was active in civic affairs and served on Lewiston City council and many celebration committees over the years. He served with the pure intent of making his community a better place for all. He was recently honored by the community for his serve at the first annual "Wells Jackson Horse Pull."

Wells was a hard working, honest man. He was proud of his family and provided many wonderful memories for his posterity by taking them for rides on the horse drawn wagons and bob sled complete with Swedish Sleigh bells.
The family expresses their appreciation for the tender loving and competent care provided by the many caring hospice aides and staff over the many years they came into the home to give their assistance and love. Special thanks to his granddaughter Shalise for her professional loving and tender care at all hours of the day and night.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, September 6 in the Lewiston First Ward chapel with Bishop Michael Stephenson conducting. Friends may call at the ward building at 10 South 1600 West, Lewiston, Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. and Wednesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. prior to the service. Burial will be in the Lewiston City Cemetery. Services will be under the direction of the Nelson Funeral Home.
