He was lovingly adopted and raised by Caleb Carter (1855-1917), and his wife Henrietta Josephine Hiers -Carter (1857-1931) of Lodge, Colleton County, South Carolina upon the death of his Mother, Ida All-Johns around 1905.
Bartow H. Carter and his wife, Minnie Gertrude Mills-Carter (1891-1978), had only one child, Ruth Josephine Carter-Jones - Blackwell from her first marriage. Their grand-daughter, Rebecca Ann Blackwell-Warfel - Casey from her first marriage - is buried next to their graves along with her son, Paul Anthony Casey.
