My husband, our father, our grandfather, our great-grandfather, peacefully passed away on April 4th, 2009 surrounded by his loving family. He was 83 years of age.

Curtis Sutherland Clauson was born in 1925 in Chicago to Stanley and Hazel Bayer. His mother was widowed and later married Eric Clauson. Curtis spent most of his adolescence in St. Petersburg, Fla. and Waynesville, N.C., until he joined the Navy at 17 years of age. When WWII ended, he enrolled into the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he joined the Air Force ROTC. Upon graduation with a Bachelor's of Science, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He was then selected for pilot training and subsequently received his pilot wings. He flew numerous aircraft including the F-86, T-33 and the F-4 during the Vietnam conflict.

Curtis married Marjorie Golden of Staten Island, N. Y. in 1949. He served his country for 34 years. During this time the Clauson clan was stationed at Presque Isle, Maine; Rabat, French Morocco; East Moriches, Long Island, N.Y.; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Trenton, Ontario; Myrtle Beach, S. C.; and finally, Eglin Air Force. Colonel Clauson was affectionately known as "the Claw" by his fellow officers and airmen. After retiring from the Air Force, Curtis helped start Walton Nursery and Supplies in Santa Rosa Beach with his sons, Peter and Eric.

Curtis Clauson achieved many accomplishments such as: Fire Board Commissioner, Chairman of the Walton County Republican Party, Walton County alternate delegate to the San Diego Republican Convention, Dedalions member, member of the Taxpayer's Association, and a proud 4th degree member of Knights of Columbus of St. Rita's Catholic Church. He loved to sail his 37-foot sailboat and was Commodore of the Fort Walton Beach Yacht Club. When he was in his 60s, Curtis achieved a lifelong goal by sailing across the Atlantic accompanied by 3 dear friends.

Curtis is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Marjorie Clauson, his sister Laura Mae Ray of Waynesville, N.C., eight children: Michael Clauson and wife, Sita of American Canyon, Calif.; Patricia McQueen and husband, Stan of Pensacola; Eric Clauson and wife, Jennifer of Santa Rosa Beach; Tony Clauson and wife, Lynn of Milton; Peter Clauson and wife, Paula of Santa Rosa Beach; James Clauson of Santa Rosa Beach; John Clauson and wife, Laurie of Boulder, Colo.; Anne Corrigan and husband, James of Pensacola; 18 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He will be remembered for his love of life, family and country.
