James left home with two other young men and eventually found fortune raising cattle on leased Indian land in Oklahoma. In 1908 He returned to Texas with his growing family, in a coverd wagon, and bought land in Bandera County near Madena where he farmed and raised his 13 children until he died young at age 56. He never returned to visit his family in Rusk county but was visited rarely by a brother who sent news of his whereabouts back home.
