English writer, best remembered for the novel "King Solomon's Mines". He was born into a big family and received a good education. He started his career in South Africa, where he worked as a secretary to the Governor of the Colony of Natal. He settled in Norfolk upon his return to England and began preparation to the law exams but was distracted by writing novels, mostly set in African locations. Among his books were "The Wizard" (1896), "Elissa; the Doom of Zimbabwe" (1899), and "Black Heart and White Heart; a Zulu Idyll" (1900). He also got involved in politics, supporting reforms of agriculture.
