PASSING OF EARLY SETTLER The late Mr E. T. Rendle, who passed away on February 5 at the residence of his daughter, Mrs W. E. Beale, was born at Plymouth, Devon, on July 10 1851 and just prior to coming to New Zealand he married Miss Kinsman at St Day's, Cornwall. Mr and Mrs Rendle sailed to New Zealand on the Helen Denny in 1874 and settled for a short time in Waipawa. In 1877, Mr Rendle took up a bush section on Woodlands Road, Woodville and thereafter spent the greater part of his life in this district. Mr Rendle took an active interest in the development of the township and was for some years a member of the Borough Council. He early associated himself with the Methodists, who were worshipping in a cottage in Holmes;s Lane and was a faithful worker through all the changes until they finally settled in the present McLean Street Church. During those years he filled many important offices, including that of circuit steward, Ar the time of his death he was the oldest surviving lay-reader and trustee. The funeral took place on Friday, February 7, when a large gathering of his fellow-citizens paid their last tribute to his memory. The abundance of wreaths betokened the respect in which he was held. A memorial service was conducted in the Methodist Church on the Sunday evening following, when several of Mr Rendle's favourite hymns were sung, Rev G. Knowles-Smith officiating
