H. Bernerd Fink, 89, Topeka, former president and chairman of the board of directors of C-G-F Grain Co., died Monday, March 22, 1999, at a Topeka retirement home.

He was born Oct. 30, 1909, in Topeka, to Homer B. and Mattie McNair Fink. He attended Boswell Junior High and graduated from Topeka High School in 1927. He graduated from the University of Kansas School of Business in 1931.

He began his career at Central National Bank in Topeka where he worked from 1931 to 1937. He was a partner in Fink Brothers General Insurance from 1937 to 1942. He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945 and held the rank of lieutenant commander.

He was manager of the Updegraff Buick agency in Topeka from 1945 to 1951 and a partner in Midwest Livestock Co. from 1951 to 1955. He was president of C-G-F Grain Co. from 1955 to 1976 and chairman of the board from 1976 to 1983. He was chairman of the board of CGF Industries from 1983 to 1997.

He was a director of First National Bank from 1964 to 1984, of Continental Life and Accident in Boise, Idaho, from 1967 to 1979, of the National Grain and Feed Dealers Association from 1963 to 1980, of the Topeka Savings Association from 1963 to 1980 and of the Penn Marine Co. from 1980 to 1989. He was a vice-president of the Neon Tube Light Co., from 1963 to 1991, of the Fink Foundation from 1962 to 1997 and of Topeka Railway Equipment Co. from 1980 to 1986.

He had served on the boards of trustees of First Congregational and First Presbyterian churches. He was a member of Topeka Country Club, Alexandria Country Club in Alexandria, Minn., and Paradise Valley Country Club in Paradise Valley, Ariz.

He established the H. Bernerd Fink Award for excellence in teaching at the University of Kansas in 1959 and served on the School of Business advisory board at the university since 1970. He was a past president of the Greater University Fund and the University of Kansas Alumni Association in Topeka. He had been active in Republican Party affairs and was a treasurer for the Reagan for President campaign in 1975.

He had served as United Fund campaign chairman in 1963 and served six years on the board of directors. He also was a director for Boy Scouts of America in the 1960s. He was elected to the Topeka High School Hall of Fame in 1998.

He married Jane Mills on Sept. 14, 1935, in Topeka. She died in 1953. He married Ruth G. Cochener on March 31, 1955, in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include daughters, Marcia F. Anderson, Salina, and Elizabeth F. Farnsworth, Berkeley, Calif.; a stepson, Bruce G. Cochener, Wichita, stepdaughters, Diana C. Broze, Seattle, and Caroline C. Bolene, Santa Fe, N.M.; sisters, Virginia Reamon, Topeka, and Loraine Henry, Albuquerque, N.M.; five grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a stepgreat- grandchild.

Private burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Memorial services will be at noon Thursday at First Congregational Church. Mr. Fink will lie in state after 8 a.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Funeral Home. The casket will remain closed.
