Robert was born to Grace and Lee Baker in Austin, TX. Bobby was a fifth generation Texan. He graduated from Austin High School in 1948 and attended The University of Texas. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1953. Shortly after his return to the University, he met the love of his life, Ann Corn McAshan. They married in 1955 and had three children, two boys and a girl, Harris McAshan, Frank Matthews and Louise Baker. Ann and Bobby raised their family in Houston. Bobby was an independent oil operator and one of the developers of the Cypress oil field in Harris County. He was honored to serve as a political advanceman from 1968 to 1974 for the White House and the State Department. They moved to a ranch in Gillespie County in 1985.
