JOEL HOLMES JR., M.D.

Dr. Joel G. Holmes Jr. passed away Sunday, March 29, 2009, at the age of 89. He was born March 20, 1920, in Longbranch, N.J., to mother, Marguerite Jackson Holmes and father, Joel Holmes Sr. His father was a graduate of West Point and a general in the U.S. Army. Joel grew up in Longbranch and later started his 58-year medical career by attending Stanford University, as well as George Washington University in Washington, D.C. His college education culminated with a "tour of duty" in the Army. Captain Holmes specialized in psychiatric treatment of both American and German POW's. At the conclusion of his "tour of duty," Dr. Holmes moved to Las Vegas and opened his practice in psychiatry. While living in Las Vegas, he met his lovely wife, of 46 years, Elinor "Betsy" Waffle. Dr. Holmes is survived by his wife, Betsy; daughter, Judy; son, Joel III; and daughter, Laura. Viewing will be 1-2 p.m. Friday, April 3, at Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St., with graveside service to immediately follow.
