Capt. Reynolds was mortally wounded during the final charge on the Dimmock Line outside of Petersburg, VA, June 18, 1864. He died aboard a medical transport ship off of City Point, VA, on June 20, 1864. There is a collection of letters from Thomas Reynolds to his girl friend, Louise Seward, at the Delaware State Archives. Here is a transcribed letter (to "Lou's" father) from that collection:

June 22nd, 1864

Mr. J. Seward,

Sir by request of friends I convey to you the Sad intelligence of the death of Capt. Thomas M. Reynolds of the 4th Reg. Del. Vol. he died from wounds receive from the explosion of a Shell in the late battles of the Wilderness before Richmond. His brother has gone on to secure his body and will be at the residence of his Father on Friday next. Capt. Reynolds was a young man of great promise. His death has cast a gloom over the entire Circle of friends.
