Gustav Bock was born in 1835 in the province of Pommern, Prussia, Germany. In 1855, at the age of 21, he sailed from Bremen, Germany to America. He landed in New Orleans and went up the Mississippi River to St. Louis. From there he proceeded up the Missouri River to the town of Hermann, MO, where he lived for a short time. He move to Third Creek Township and settled on a farm 2 miles southeast of New Woollam. He married another German Immigrant, Margretha Gerken in 1858 and they had 11 children. Gustav was a very religious man and helped to establish a Methodist church in New Woollam. A descendant of Prussian soldiers, Gustav volunteered with the Gasconade County Home Guard during the Civil War and was called into active duty for several months in 1864. After Margretha's death in 1911, Gustav spent his final years with his daughter, Augusta Paap, in Berlin, Nebraska. When he passed away in 1913 he was buried beside his beloved wife in the Owensville, Missouri Cemetery.
