Mr. Bernt was born on Aug. 23, 1922, on the family farm north of Spalding to Frank and Anna (Rothleutner) Bernt. He attended School District No. 10 and graduated from Spalding Academy in 1940. After graduation, he took over the family farm.
He married Rosemarie Bauer on April 23, 1946, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding.
He married Yvonne (Speas) Pfeifer on Aug. 24, 1971 at Grand Island.
They lived on the family farm until 1990, when they moved to Spalding. He did a lot of woodworking and was a greenskeeper at Cottonwoods Greens golf course for the last five years.
He was on the Bureau of Reclamation for 30 years and helped with the recent renovation of Spalding Dam. He was a lifetime member of the St. Michaels Mens Club. He helped friends and neighbors with any needed projects.
Survivors include two daughters, Chris (Dean) Scheef of Lexington and Jackie (Scott) Herley of Spalding; one son, James of Lexington; six stepchildren; four foster children; two sisters, Betty (Lester) Peterson of North Platte and Mary Kay (Bernard) of Spalding; 17 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by one foster son, Richard Fader.
Funeral Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Spalding officiated by Rev. Frank Hoelck.
Visitation: 3-9 p.m. Sunday with rosaries at 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the church.
