Orphaned at a young age, Ralph lived with his maiden aunt schoolteacher, Phebe. Graduated Gen Agric, U of IL, joined Navy for 2 years, then headed west to find brother George, see college classmate, and "see the west." They worked the harvests, ending in Washington State at Starbucks, with two job possibilities, and flipped a coin that turned them northwest to Neilton, WA. Worked in shake mill, cut wood, eventually he logged. Arrived in November, didn't see the sun until mid-March, and stayed; later said he had to wait for his wife to grow up...
