LATE Mr J.P. GOODWIN The death occurred at his residence in Hope road, Woodville, on Sunday, of an interesting personality, Mr James Pinyon Goodwin, at the age of 78 years. Mr Goodwin claimed to have been the first white boy born at Waipukurau. He was a son of the late Mr William Goodwin, who came to New Zealand from Kent, England. One of the original pupils of the Napier Boys High School, Mr Goodwin was a keen athlete and right up to the time of his death retained more than a passing interest in all forms of out-door sports. He followed farming pursuits in the Southern Hawke's Bay district all his life and had resided at Woodville for the past 27 years. He was among the early settlers who were honoured at the Woodville W omens Institute's Pioneer Day gathering held in February last in connection with the local Centennial celebrations. On that occasion Mr Goodwin was presented with a Centennial ribbon marking a record of over 75 years residence in New Zealand.
His wife predeceased him 13 years ago. The surviving members of the family are: Mrs C. L. Stevenson (Dunedin), Mrs M. Kearins (Kairanga), Miss J. Goodwin (Woodville), Mr W. J. Goodwin (Woodville) and Mr C. F. Goodwin (Shannon).
A short memorial service at St David's Presbyterian Church, Woodville, preceded the funeral yesterday afternoon. There was a very large attendance of relatives and friends to pay their last respects to a pioneer who was held in the highest esteem throughout Southern Hawke's Bay and neighbouring district. Many beautiful floral tributes covered the casket. The graveside service and that at the church were performed by Rev W. H. Nicholas. The pall-bearers were Messrs J. Franklyn (Wanganui), W. Franklyn (Dannevirke), E, McNutt (Waipukurau), M. Kearins (Palmerston North), R. H. Morgan and J. Morgan (Woodville).
