GILES
- At his residence, Upper Woodlands Road, on Saturday, 3rd October, Henry R. Giles, in his 72nd year.

Woodville Examiner, 5 Oct 1914
PASSED AWAY
Henry R. Giles; aged 71
Another of our oldest identities passed away on Saturday evening in the person of Mr Henry Giles.
Mr Giles was born in Rainham, Kent, England, seventy-one years ago and in early middle age came out to the Dominion, where he remained the following thirty-nine years of his life. He landed at Napier and formed a partnership with the late Mr Wilson, with whom he executed a number of important works around Taradale and that neighborhood. On the Woodville Small-Farm Association being formed, Messrs Giles and Wilson joined it, taking up a section between them. The one that fell to them was the very apex of the northern point of the block and Mr Giles built, when he and his partner came up in 1879, on the Bushmills road frontage, while Mr Wilson built on the Meredith road one. They were engaged in contracting and carting for some time before taking up their residence here and for years after they came Mr Giles' dray was the only wheeled vehicle on the Woodlands road. Some time afterwards Mr Wilson was killed in an accident and Mr Giles carried on business as a contractor, carter and farmer. When the Borough Council let the maintenance of its streets by contract, Mr Giles secured the work and for many years was the most familiar figure on the streets, wet or fine, keeping them in as near apple-pie order as they could be kept. After losing the street contract he took matters rather more easily.
Mr Giles was a member of Court Sir Charles Napier, A.O.F., in Napier and continued his connection with it through life. He took an active part in establishing Court Woodville and held office in it as Chief Ranger etc., under the rules of the Order, which provide for new courts being coached in their young days by old hands. He also took a hearty, though not a prominent, interest in local affairs and institutions.
Mr Giles life had been one of hard work and exposure and it told on his constitution, though he had been originally a more than ordinarily strongly-built and powerful man. For some time past he had been in failing health and for the last week his family had realised that the end was near. On Saturday night it came at the comparatively early age of 71.
Mr Giles leaves a widow, four sons, Messrs E. H. Giles of The Examiner staff, Ernest who is a Borough Councillor, Charles and Horace and one daughter, Mrs Wilkinson, who will have the sympathy of a large circle of friends, especially of those who knew the late Mr Giles personally.
The funeral takes place at the Woodville Cemetery to-morrow at 1.30.

The funeral of the late Mr H. R. Giles took place yesterday afternoon and was largely attended, though it was no doubt interfered with to some extent by the gale. The service was conducted by the Rev Canon Eccles and before the body was carried to the grace and at the graveside, the funeral service of the Foresters Order were read by C.R. Bro. A. M. Pickering
