James was the son of Benjamin Franklin and Mary Ellen (Roebuck) Cunningham, and the husband of Susie Matilda Moody. He was the father of Hugh Lee, Louid Mason, and Robert Givan Cunningham, who died in the influenza outbreak of 1918. [There is at least one account that the three brothers, who died within three weeks of each other, died of complications from measles, including pneumonia.] Other children of James and Susie were James Kenneth, Susie Mae (Cunningham) Davis, Louise E. (Cunningham) Worthy, and Lula M.(Cunningham) Allen.
