Thomas Madison Coon, pioneer of Benton county, died at S o'clock this morning at the family home at Bellfountain. He had been failing for several months.

The funeral will be at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the church at Bellfountain, with Rev. Clarence W. Reynolds of Corvallis officiating. Interment will be in the Bellfountain cemetery.

Mr. Coon was a son of George Kelley and Catherine Morgan Coon and was born in Mercer county, Ill., January 20, 1846. He crossed the plains with his parents by ox team, coming over the old Barlow trail. The family arrived in Oregon in 1863, locating first in Linn county, near Shedd, and later resided on the old Washington L. Coon place near Oakville.

He was married to Miss Sarah E. Jones in 1871, and two daughters were born to the couple. They are Mrs. Elsie Pierce, Albany, and Mrs. Fannie Eels, Astoria. Mrs. Coon died in 1876.

In September, 1884, Mr. Coon married Miss Eva Gibbs, in Benton county. There were seven children by this marriage, Mrs. Bertha Darnielle, The Dalles; Mrs. Dora. Thompson, Portland; Mrs. Emma Hinton and Mrs. Maud Lamb, Bellfountain; Marvin Coon, Beaver Creek, Mrs. Pearle Poundstone, Portland. Miss Vivian Coon died in 1912. There are 22 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Mr. Coon was one of eight children. His father died at the age of 91 years and his mother at 84. Surviving brothers and sisters are Martin Coon, Couer de Alene, Idaho; George Coon, Corvallis, and Mrs. Mary Herbert, Eugene.

During last summer Mr. Coon made a trip over the Mt. Hood loop arid followed the old Barlow trail over which he had traveled as a boy, locating the old toll gate and recalling the incidents of pioneer days when the wagon train passed through it. Mr. Coon had been a member of the Christian church for many years and was active in that denomination. He was widely known throughout Benton county. The remains are at the Holhngsworth funeral home in this city.
