From the National Archives, Washington, D.C. Declaration for Disability Army Pension: "State of Indiana, County of Parke, on the fifth day of July 1890, personally appeared before a Justice of the Peace, Hiram Heacox, age 55 years, a resident of Odd, in the County of Parke, who being duly sworn, declared that he is the identical Hiram Heacox who enlisted in the service of the United States on the 24th day of April 1858, as a private in Company F of the 5th Regiment of the United States Infantry, Volunteers, commanded by Captain Harry R. Seldon, and was discharged at Fort Marcy, State of New Mexico, on the 24th day of April 1863." Signed by his own hand, Hiram Heacox. Since the above is a sworn statement from Hiram himself, his correct age was 55, making his birth year 1835.
