His body was found floating in the Sydney Harbour on 14 April 1933. Alex, an accountant of a leading mercantile house in Taranaki, had been missing from some weeks from New Plymouth.

In Harbour What was about to be disregarded as a hoax was yesterday proved a tragic truth when police discovered the body of a man floating in Parsley Bay. Signed by Alexander McDiarmid, of Darlinghurst, a note to Vaucluse police, received in last Tuesday morning's post, said that his body would be found at Parsley Bay. "I cannot stand it any longer" added the note. Yesterday morning the body was recovered by Constable Toyer of the Water Police and taken to the Ciry Morgue.
The City Coroner returned a verdict of suicide
