Lester, pioneer farmer of Marshall Co., died after a lingering illness, at the St Thomas Mercy hospital in Marshalltown, Saturday at 2:30 pm.

When seven years old he came to Marshall Co. with his parents.

He and his wife Syrena bought & moved to a farm one and a half miles southwest of Rhodes, near Melbourne, IA. This farm was named "Mutton Hollow" because they raised so many sheep. They farmed this land all of their married life except for the few years they lived in Ames and after retirement when they lived in Melbourne.

In 1923, before people traveled extensively, they went to New Hampshire in their Kissel touring car to visit relatives they had never seen. Loaded down with tent, cooking utensils, food, side curtains, cots, bedding, spare tires and luggage on the running boards and back seat, they waved goodbye to the rest of the family and left for the summer, while a new house was being built in Ames.

Leslie worked on the college experimental farms while they lived alone a short distance from the college. They had a chicken house and chickens in the backyard, so they could have their own eggs. They even had enough to sell to a small grocery store nearby. They belonged to the Methodist Church.
