Husband of Elizabeth RIDENOUR (1758-1837)

Boltzer TROUT, Sr, whose true given name was most likely Johann Balthasar TROUT, was born 1757 in Germantown, Philadelphia, PA, the son of Jacob TRAUT, Sr. (1726-1772) and wife Barbara KLEIN. He was most likely named for his grandfather, Johann Balthasar TRAUT, Sr., who had been born about 1685, perhaps in Frankenthal Germany, and had died 1750 in Germantown. His grandfather had been among the original group of Church of Brethren (Dunkards) that had arrived in Germantown in September 1729. His granduncle, Johann Heinrich TRAUT was a deacon and an original leadership figure in the Church of Brethren (COB) movement in America.

In 1767, when Boltzer TROUT was about 10 years old, his father Jacob suffered a severe reversal of fortune, losing their Germantown lands in a sheriff's tax sale, and the family removed to near Stephens City, Frederick, VA, where his father later died in 1772.

On August 1, 1777, Boltzer, now 20 years old, enlisted as a Private for six months in Capt. John NICEWANGER's Company, Col. GIBSON'S Regiment, and immediately marched from Winchester, VA to Fort Pitt (now Pittsburgh), arriving on about 1 Sep 1777 in an expedition against hostile Indians. After about six weeks, he next marched under General HANNA(?) from Fort Pitt, PA to Fort Wheeling, VA (now WV), arriving in time to help bury those who had just been slain in an engagement with the Indians. The winter was very cold and the troops suffered very much from exposure. In Feb 1778, his company marched back to Winchester, VA, completing his first term of service. Boltzer TROUT next enlisted 1 Feb 1780 for three months in a "Troop of Light Horsemen" under Capt. Isaac ZANES. They marched to Albermarle(?) where they attended to English prisoners, but then learned Lord Charles CORNWALLIS might be marching north towards Fredericksburg, VA, and so marched to that location where they remained for several weeks, then again returning to Winchester, VA. Boltzer TROUT next enlisted in August 1781 as a private soldier in a Company of Foot commanded by Capt. Job BELL, in Col. William DARKE's Regiment. They joined the command of Gen. George WASHINGTON and marched for Yorktown, VA where they laid a three-week siege, resulting the surrender of the British troops on 19 Oct 1781 and the capture of Lord Charles CORNWALLIS. After the Battle of Yorktown, his unit returned to Winchester, VA, where Boltzer was discharged for the third and final time in about Nov 1781.

In about 1783, Boltzer TROUT married Elizabeth RIDENOUR in Royalton, Dauphin, PA, although it is not clear why he was in this part of Pennsylvania at that time. Regardless, the young couple set up housekeeping in Winchester, Frederick, VA and later moved in about 1805 from Winchester, Frederick, VA to a farm near Delmont on Beaver Run in Salem Twp, Westmoreland, PA. Seven children were born to this union, all in Winchester, Frederick, VA prior to their move to Westmoreland County, PA.

Published sources disagree on whether Boltzer died in Allegheny Twp or Washington Township, but Boltzer was about 80 years old and was buried near Polk Run, Washington Twp, Westmoreland, PA.

Boltzer TROUT's Revolutionary War service was the basis of DAR membership #96335 for great granddaughter Ida May TROUT MARING (1861-1957)

Baltzer TROUT, Sr., is documented as descending from "Line #2" in the TROUT-DNA Research Project.
