Died at Letterman Hospital, The Presidio

Was a laborer in civilian life

Enlisted on 5 August 1872 in Chicago, Illinois into the 7the U. S. Cavalry.

At the Battle of the Little Big Horn he was a Sgt. under Thomas Weir of Company D. Weir saw the horrible dust further on and knew that Custer and the companies with him were in trouble. He asked permission of Reno and Benteen to go to Custer's aid. He was denied, but took off anyway with his troop, which Russell would have been a member of. They were finally confronted by hostile indians and forced to make a very heasty retreat back to Reno Hill. There they dug in and fought the remainder of the fight.
