Mary Crawford (or Coulter?) McChesney was the daughter of Robert McChesney and Elizabeth Johnston and granddaughter of Zachariah Johnston and Ann Robertson. She married Matthew White, Sr. on 30 Apr 1820.

They had 9 known White children (2 died very young):

Robert McChesney, Aug 1821 - 7 Jul 1822, below
Eliza Ann, 14 Nov 1824 - 21 Dec 1825, below
Martha Emeline, 28 Jun 1826 (Jacob D Williamson), below
Anna Maria McBride, 9 Dec 1827 (Maj. James Gardner Paxton)
Susan Wilson, 27 Jan 1830 - 14 Jan 1850
Elizabeth Hannah, 12 Oct 1831 (Elisha F Paxton), below
Matthew Xavier, 6 Jul 1836, below
Mary Louisa, 20 Mar 1838 (Wilson T. Newman) below
Helen O'Hara, 19 Feb 1843 (Jno B Lady), below

Her father died on 12 Feb 1842, before her daughter Helen was born. In his will, he wrote: to daughter Mary White (already gave her portion of my estate plus $50.) Her mother died 6 years and 9 months later on 14 Nov 1848.

Another daughter marries in Lexington, Rockbridge County per the Richmond Whig & Public Advertiser of Richmond, VA, dated 4 Dec 1846 issue. On Nov. 26, Rev. John Skinner, of the Presbyterian Church, marries attorney James G. Paxton, to Miss Ann M. White, the dau. of Matthew White, all of Lexington (Lib of VA).

On the 1850 Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found merchant and farmer Mathew White, 64, with $58K in real estate; MARY White, 48; Elizabeth H White, 16; Mathew White, 15; Mary S White, 12 and Hellen White, 9. They were all VA born, except for Mathew, Sr. in Ireland.

On 2 Nov 1854, her daughter Elizabeth marries attorney and the General of Stonewall's Brigade, Elisha F "Bull" Paxton.

In 1860, her husband was the wealthiest reported property owner on the census in Lexington.

On the 1860 Lexington, VA census, I found farmer Mathew White, 75, born in Ireland, with $71, 475 (2nd # is hard to read) in real estate and $79,343 in personal property; MARY C White, 56, VA born and Helen O White, 17, VA born.

1864 was a terrible year for Mary. Her son Matthew, Jr. was captured and shot by the Federalist army on July 13th and 36 days later, her husband died of old age, on August 18th. She was the informant to report both of their deaths in Rockbridge County, Virginia.

Matthew White, Jr., was born in Rockbridge Co., Virginia, the son of Matthew & Mary C White. He was a farmer and the spouse of Mary Hogshead. In Rockbridge Co., Virginia, he died on 13 July 1864, the cause of death was "Captured and shot by the yankies," aged 26 years and 7 months. His mother, Mary E (sic) White was the informant. Per the 1864 Rockbridge Co., Virginia Death Register, line 14, original on Familysearch. Line 15 was her husband Matthew, Sr. and she was also his informant.

On the 1870 Lexington, VA census. I found MARY C White, 68, with $11,500 in real estate and $500 in personal property; Lizzie Paxton, 31; S Newman, 29; Mathew Paxton, 13; Galetin Paxton, 10; Frank Paxton, 8; Lilley Newman, 9; Tom White, 70 and John A R Varner, 30, all VA born.

On the 4 Jun 1880 Lexington, VA census, grand mother MARY C. White, 79 is residing with daughter Anna M Paxton, 50 and granddaughters (Principal of Academy) Margaret Paxton, 31 and Susan W. Paxton, 25 and others. VA born.

Losing her son Matthew: "Fannie Wilson recorded the execution of Matthew White Jr.: "He was seen on Sunday afternoon marching out of town with a squad of soldiers, who shot him for bush-whacking." She noted that Federal troops carried out the execution "all the time deceiving his parents." When the parents asked about their son, they were told he was "at home." Also "his body was found unburied in the woods near Mrs. Cameron's house" after the Federals left. Or "Some officers who had stayed all night at Mr. Matthew White's and breakfasted there, had in reply to the anxious inquiries of the poor old mother about her son who had been arrested some days before, assured her that he was in jail just opposite her house...." Plus White "was said to have shot one of their number." A Brief Sketch of the Life and Character of the Late David S. Creigh, Esq. with an Authentic Account of the Circumstances of his Cruel and Lamented Death" in the Lewisburg Weekly Times Print, 1865, by Thomas Creight and Wm H Syme.
