John L. "Smokey" Pella, 62, of 716 Woodward Ave., Kittanning died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004 at his residence. He was born April 9, 1942 in Pittsburgh to August and Gwendalyn (Wolfe) Pella. Mr. Pella worked as a prison guard at the Joliet Penitentiary in Joliet, Ill. and as a welder from Pullman Standard in Butler until his retirement. An Army veteran, he served for the military police during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Kittanning Men's Club. He enjoyed playing pool, hunting, fishing and reading. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Margaret A. (Shumaker) Pella whom he married March 13, 1971; four sons, Ronald Pella and wife Julie, Matthew Pella, Charles Carl and wife Judy all of Kittanning, and Brian Carl and wife Sharon of Ford City; one daughter, Deborah Gray of Kittanning; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Charles A. Pella; and one sister, Diana L. Pella both of Kittanning. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, John D. Pella. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Kennedy & Blodgett Funeral Home, Inc., 253 N. Grant Ave., Kittanning where funeral services will held at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Robert W. Grimm, of the Kittanning Church of God, officiating. Burial will be in the Cochran Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Kittanning Public Library, 280 N. Jefferson St., Kittanning.
